Jewelry Making Event to Benefit Fonkoze's Chemen Lavi Miyò

What is Fonkoze?  Fonkoze is Haiti’s alternative bank for the organized poor. In fact, it is a family of three institutions working together shoulder to shoulder towards a single compelling mission: building the economic foundations for democracy in Haiti by providing the rural poor with the tools they need to lift themselves out of poverty. This mission is reflected in our name, Fonkoze, which is an acronym for the Haitian Creole phrase “Fondasyon Kole Zepòl” meaning “Shoulder-to-Shoulder Foundation.”

Chemen Lavi Miyò (CLM), or the Path to a Better Life, reaches out to those on the margins of society. Throughout the 18-month program, case managers support members as they learn to run small businesses, repair their homes, and access health care and education services. Participants develop both their capacity and their confidence until they have their own functioning microenterprises.

So what does jewelry fabrication have to do with this?  A good friend here in DC has been an advocate and strong supporter for Fonkoze, specifically their Chemen Lavi Miyò program.  So after her and I had a little tête-à-tête, we both thought that a Jewelry Making Event would be a wonderful way to raise funds for the organization.  As you can see, the guests had a wonderful time learning about jewelry fabrication and each participant created their own set(s) of earrings and personalized necklace!

Metalsmith in Training

This past winter I was asked if I would consider teaching private lessons in metalsmithing and jewelry fabrication.  It took a bit of re-arranging the studio, but once it was ready and she began the lessons... well what can I say, we both had great fun and look at her final project (earrings below)... quite the talent!

Sunday...

It came and went.  Not an ounce of time to post a thing.  I was however lucky enough to find a moment to watch some family footage from past Mother's Day beach excursions, reflect a bit (thus the mini poem) and (icing on the cake) I gave my "mom" a hug; the quotations are present because my real mother passed away 9 years ago, so I took on a Gift Mom ever since; and this year I was able to be with her on Mother's Day!

Mother
Her words, so pure and real.
The beat in her heart,
a million miles away, we feel.

Before I headed off to the Pacific Northwest I had a chance to design, create and present a ring for an incredible woman and titled it Unconditional

Unconditional

While we're talking about Moms... over the years I've been quite fortunate to build a relationship with a family here in Washington and the mother that receives the rings below, well what can I say, lucky bunch they all are!   To see more details for each ring and the poem that accompanies it, click on the titles below the photos... enjoy!

Mother's Day

Thrid favorite "holiday" (next to April Fools & Halloween)... Mother's Day (which I'm sure will slowly creep into 1st place as I creep on in age).  During the next couple of weeks I'll be paying tribute to this day, and of course the the special ladies that we celebrate on this day; exploring what Mother's Day is, and WHY it IS important.
Beginning with the easiest of all, what to GIVE your mom.  It's simple, a hug, that's all they want, a hug and maybe toss in an, "I Love You" while you're at it.  Go ahead...

See, look how content people become when they get a hug!  P.S. No, that is not me as a brunette, it's my mom (Katherine, Kate, K.T., call her what you will, it's "Mom" to me ;)   The taller of the two, my grandmother (a.k.a Shana).
